The Power of Singing Along: A Tribute to Pete Seeger
Presented by David Fenimore

We follow last summer’s celebration of folksinger and activist Woody Guthrie by honoring the 107 th birthday of his best-known protégé, Pete Seeger. For 75 years Pete worked tirelessly to spread the gospel of community singing, an ancient and instinctive way of creating group identity by sharing rhythm, repetition, and harmony. His positive and inspiring musical energy brought folks of many ages, colors, backgrounds, and belief systems together on the side of world peace, social justice, and environmental protection. Although blacklisted for his political beliefs and activities during the McCarthy Era of the early 1950s, Pete Seeger never stopped songwriting, playing, teaching, and organizing, and became a key figure in the folk music revival of the 1960s. We’ll cover the highlights of Pete’s life, play some of his favorite songs, and hand out lyric sheets so you can sing along with special guest Kingston Trio member Tim Gorelangton!

UUCSJS member David Fenimore is privileged to present our special musical guest: singer/songwriter, banjo player and recording artist Tim Gorelangton, music director of The Kingston Trio. The original Kingston Trio was founded in the late 1950s in response to the success of Pete Seeger’s chart-topping band The Weavers, and over the next decade they recorded a then-unprecedented string of number 1 hits, including Pete’s anti-war song “Where Have all the Flowers Gone?” Tim will join us at the end of the current Trio’s East Coast tour to share his deep knowledge of Pete Seeger and protest music in general.
