Father’s Day is another secular holiday that brings families together, including parents and grandparents, in-laws and out-laws, to celebrate the role of fatherhood in our culture. At least that’s the general idea. What it has become is a marketing opportunity for sellers of “dad stuff,” ranging from ties to lawnmowers or power boats. Families are complex, and Father’s Day offers every bit of that complexity to be celebrated (or not) with a Hallmark card.
