“Hard Traveling” A 113th Birthday Tribute to Woody Guthrie
Presented by David Fenimore

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912-1963) needs little or no introduction. As composer of simple but hard-hitting lyrics celebrating diversity, equality, and social justice, Woody demanded that we not look away from the homeless, the migrant workers, and the hard working poor. Although he subscribed to no formal creed, his values aligned with the generosity, tolerance, and compassion preached by all world religions at their best. This service will offer a handful (and a handout) of his best and most inspirational songs, with an invitation to the congregation to sing along, as Woody and his good friend and protégé Pete Seeger would have wanted us to do.

David Fenimore is a UUCSJS member and emeritus professor of English at the University of Nevada, where for 33 years he taught literature, storytelling, and the humanities. He has occasionally portrayed Woody onstage, most recently at the 2022 Colorado High Plains Chautauqua. Last month he spent three weeks traveling around Oklahoma in character as early Western writer Zane Grey.
