Adult Religious Education

Programs for adults give us the chance to go deeper— intellectually, socially, ethically, and spiritually. From workshops to community service, covenant groups to discussion groups, meditation to marching—all in the context of a supportive spiritual community—Unitarian Universalism has much to offer adults beyond our Sunday services.

Every congregation chooses its own adult programs.

A congregation may offer:

  • Workshops on such topics as spirituality, theology, relationships, money, ethics, and justice;
  • Book and film discussion groups;
  • Covenant Groups, also known as Small Groups, which offer a circle of peers for reflection and discussion. These groups, different from support groups, meet monthly to consider powerful themes that give life meaning;
  • Social justice and inclusion programs engage us in changing the world, and changing our congregations. The Welcoming Congregation keeps us including and affirming people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning. Building the World We Dream About gives us a foundation for building multicultural anti-oppressive community. Standing on the Side of Love gets us out on the streets.

Current Opportunities at UUCSJS:

Adult Religious Education Class

On the third Sunday of each month we will offer Adult Religious Education and Children’s RE Learning Lab following worship. Adult RE classes will be offered on various topics and themes throughout the year, such as UU history and theology, memoir creation, spirituality and practice. You are not required to attend worship to attend Adult or Children’s RE after service. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend Adult RE or learn together in our Children’s Learning Lab.

Soul Matters Small Groups

Soul Matters Small Groups will be held on the fourth Sunday of the month as well as options for Zoom meetings and/or meetings on a different day of the fourth week of the month. Soul Matters groups are small monthly groups, connected to our worship themes, with a unique practice component that helps us not just think about the themes, but live them. Each month, participants receive a theme-based packet that includes spiritual exercises, questions that encourage reflection on daily living, and recommended resources that help participants explore the themes in more depth. Members are asked to commit to meet with their group every month throughout the year.
